Brunch at Symmetry Cafe

Who doesn’t love brunch? Evan and I decided to try the famous brunch at Symmetry in Kampong Glam for our 25th month-versary. It is a café by day, restaurant bar by night. This place is really popular and I had to make reservations one week in advance for a table on Saturday afternoon. However, do note that they will only hold the table for 15 minutes. We arrived late and had to wait for 15 minutes because our table had been given up. Waiting under the hot sun is no joke but good food is worth waiting for!

Directions to Symmetry Cafe

Symmetry Café is situated between Bugis and Lavender MRT station at 9 Jalan Kubor Road, opposite Santa Grand Hotel. You can get to Symmetry by taking the train to Bugis MRT station. Once you exit the station, walk along Victoria Street towards Lavendar MRT for about 7 minutes. You know you have reached the right place when you spot a white shophouse with striking green doors.

After waiting for 15 minutes, the waiter finally beckoned us in. “Table for 2 right?” he asked. We were glad to get away from the sun as he ushered us into the café to a small table at the back. Once seated, we quickly looked through the menu and ordered 2 mains and 1 side to share. Symmetry has a separate menu for their drinks as well, but we forgot to take a picture of that.

symmetry menuSymmetry Truffle FriesPotato Fries with Truffle Oil Emulsion – $15 We started off our brunch with this bucket of truffle fries that had black truffle salt and Parmesan cheese evenly sprinkled on top. This is definitely sinful yet yummylicious. Both Evans and I were trying to refrain from finishing it off before our mains were served. We highly recommend this as a starter.

Symmetry Big BreakfastThe Big Breakfast – $24 This is the bomb. 2 eggs of your choice, maple glazed bacon, smoked salmon, chicken cheese sausage, sauté mushroom, hashbrown, mesclun, berry butter and toast. We chose scrambled eggs. The price of $24 is a lil steep but it is truly a satisfying big breakfast. The moist and soft scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, glazed bacon, and sauté mushrooms combination is just oh so perfect!

Symmetry Tiger Prawn Aglio OlioTiger Prawn Aglio Olio – $24 Spaghatti, garlic, white wine, togarashi, konbu, olive oil, chive, Evan’s main. We felt this was neither yay nor nay. We had had better Aglio Olio elsewhere. We would prefer it if the noodle had been softer. Nevertheless, the prawns were succulent and fresh.

Symmetry WaffleWaffle – $14 Mix berry compote, peanut butter, chocolate hazelnut, maple syrup, chantilly cream, blueberries ice cream. At this point, we had already finished the Truffle Fries, The Big Breakfast and the Prawn Aglio Olio. Our stomachs still had some space to spare (there’s always space for desserts!) and we decided to ask the waitress for dessert recommendations.  We didn’t regret our choice. The warmly served waffle with its thick spread of peanut butter and blueberry ice cream/ small berries toppings made this dessert a divine indulgence. The waffle only comes with 1 scoop of ice cream, so you might want to consider adding one more scoop  ($4) for a better proportion. We’ll definitely be doing that next time!

The interior décor is a mixture of rustic and eclectic elements. There are many interesting art pieces and memorabilia. Evans was especially interested in the Jimi Hendrix pop art (which unfortunately triggered a long-winded commentary on the history of rock music). The dim lights in the café give it a comfortable and homely ambience. Most importantly, Symmetry serves good food. Overall, we like this place and will be coming back again for more.  🙂
