The Usual Place @ Jurong East (CLOSED)
The Usual Place is a new cafe located in Jurong. It serves Western foods such as pastas, fish and chips, chicken wings, truffles fries and waffles, along with a selection of refreshing fruit juices and premium Gryphon Teas. Update: the cafe has CLOSED down
While this cafe might indeed be “the usual place” to hang out for some people living in the West, it definitely is not the usual hangout for most, considering that it is located in the faraway land of Jurong. But hey, I’m a Westerner myself and I’m glad to have discovered this cafe that serves delicious foods in such a convenient location (for me).
Great Vibe and Sincere Service
As I stepped into The Usual Place, the first impression was one of friendly and sincere service. We were quickly led to a table, and all of the staffs were friendly and attentive to our needs. We were impressed by the great service despite the cafe being newly-open.
The cafe has a simple industrial-themed design. Wooden tables and colourful metal chairs are lined up neatly in a cozy space lit up by quaint tungsten bulbs hanging from the ceiling. On the whole, The Usual Place exudes a homely vibe that sets diners at ease, making this a nice place for gatherings with family and friends.
Salted Egg Prawn Pasta ($12.90)
First up, I dug into The Usual Place’s signature dish: Salted Egg Prawn Pasta ($12.90). As I put the creamy oodles of noodles into my mouth, my eyes lighted up.
This was delicious!
The spaghetti was perfectly al dente, and the fat prawns – all five of them – were fresh and succulent. But the star of the dish was undoubtedly the salted egg cream sauce. It was creamy and savoury without being overwhelming, and went perfectly with the spaghetti. The little pieces of chilli padis scattered in the pasta completed the awesome gastronomical experience. So shiok lah!
Vongole ($8.90)
The Usual Place’s Vongole ($8.90) is served with a generous portion of clams. Like the Salted Egg Prawn Pasta, the spaghetti was nicely al dente. I enjoyed this dish as well, but I found the pasta base to be slightly bland. Perhaps it’s just me, but I would have preferred the flavours to be stronger. On the whole, still a decent dish!
The Usual Wings ($6.50)
Our final dish was The Usual Wings ($6.50). These signature wings of The Usual Place had savoury crispy skins with tender and juicy white meats beneath. I enjoyed these wings – I guess you can’t really go wrong with fried chicken wings!
Yuzu Mint ($4)
The Usual Place’s Yuzu Mint ($4) was the perfect drink to wash down the oily foods we had eaten earlier. The refreshing scent of mint along with the sweet tangy taste of Yuzu made this the perfect drink in Singapore’s hot weather. I gulped it down in a matter of minutes.
Excellent Service, Delicious Food, Affordable Price, Great Vibe!
We left the cafe feeling completely satisfied. I’m glad we discovered this hidden gem in Jurong. Despite being newly-open, The Usual Place offers excellent service, delicious foods at an affordable price point, and a nice homely vibe. For non-Western dwellers who are willing to embark on the Journey to the West, the trip will definitely be worth your effort. Oh, and there is no GST and service charge at The Usual Place.
