Khao San Road – Awesome Thai Food in Toronto (Canada)

While touring Toronto, Raevian and I weren’t expecting to stumble upon great Thai food. But this was exactly what we found at Khao San Road, a Thai food restaurant located along Charlotte Street in Toronto, Canada.

Khao San Road

Khao San Road offers delicious Thai food in a cozy space. This popular restaurant is known for its long queues during peak hours. We arrived at about 8pm and still had to wait for about 30 minutes before getting a table! However, the awesome food made our wait worthwhile. If you wish to, you can also get a seat at the bar, Bang Sue, upstairs. However we chose to sit downstairs instead.

Bustling Ambience

I enjoyed the bustling ambience inside Khao San Road. The space is cozy and casual, with a convivial atmosphere that makes it a great place to dine with family and friends. However, our food took almost 15 minutes to arrive, which seemed like an eternity because we were already famished after waiting for 30 minutes earlier. Luckily, the staff were apologetic and provided good service during our meal.

Red Curry ($16)

We are big fans of curry, so we ordered the Red Curry with Chicken ($16). Khao San Road offers different spiciness levels for its foods, and we went with the Thai Spicy level. This was level 6 spicy, with the lowest being 0 and maximum being 11. Being Singaporeans with seasoned spicy palates, we were confident that we would be able to handle the Thai Spicy level with no issues.

After waiting for a while, the dish finally arrived. Luckily, it did not disappoint. The curry had just the right amount of spicy kick, and the chicken was savoury and tender. I highly recommend going for the Thai Spicy level if you can take spicy food! I liked that the curry wasn’t overly milky, but still had a nice smooth texture. I really enjoyed the pumpkin too, which was chewy and especially sweet. I later found out that it was actually Kabocha, a Japanese pumpkin that is known for its sweet flavour.

Pad Gra Prao ($16)

We also ordered the Pad Gra Prao, which was essentially stir fried minced pork with holy basil and chilli, served with rice and topped off with a pretty fried egg. This dish alone made our long wait at the restaurant totally worthwhile! The savoury stir fried pork was cooked perfectly with the holy basil and went so well with the fragrant white rice. The Thai chilli added a spicy flavour which I loved. I poked the fried egg and the golden egg york oozed down sensually, complementing the overall taste of the dish.

Thai Iced Tea ($4.50)

And of course, we had to order the Thai Iced Tea ($4.50), a popular Thai style milk tea. This was definitely a satisfying drink to wash down our Thai food. It was rich and milky, and tasted similar to the ones we had tried in Bangkok. However, we found it to be just a little too sweet.

Conclusion

Me looking visibly pleased after a satisfying meal

With its fantastic Thai food and convivial ambience, it is no wonder that Khao San Road is so popular in Toronto. Even though we had to wait quite long for our food, it was definitely worth the wait!
