Fei Jie Snacks Shop 肥姐小食店 – Delicious Street Food in Mong Kok, Hong Kong

We were strolling around the bustling street markets of Mong Kok when we came across Fei Jie Snacks Shop 肥姐小食店, a famous street food joint in Hong Kong popular with both locals and tourists.

Fei Jie Snacks Shop (肥姐小食店)

Fei Jie Snacks Shop (肥姐小食店) is a Mong Kok street food vendor known for its braised items like pig offals, chicken livers, turkey offals, and octopus tentacles.

Yes, Chinese do eat everything.

The shop was even featured on the late Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations: Hong Kong” TV show in 2007, where local foodie Josh Tse brought him to enjoy these “meat and parts on a stick”. Since then, the shop’s popularity has soared even higher.

We visited Fei Jie on a Sunday night at around 9.30pm and there were about 10 people in the queue. However, it moved really fast and before I was fully ready to order, I was already at the counter (within about 5 minutes).

How to Order

Before queuing up, you can look through the items in the glass display and also the menus plastered all over the shopfront first so you can decide on your order. Prepare your money in advance.

Once you reach the counter, you need to tell the lady your order in Cantonese because they don’t speak English (I’m not sure if they speak Mandarin Chinese).

However, if you are a tourist (like me), you can simply point to the item you want.

The lady will ask if you want to add mustard (in Cantonese). If you can’t take spicy food, you should politely refuse because the sauce is rather spicy. However, if you enjoy spiciness, please say yes or nod your head! You will get your skewers within a minute.

Big Combo (大皇牌)

And that’s how you order! I wasn’t really sure what to eat, so I went with what seemed to be a popular option: the Big Combo 大皇牌 (HKD32). This consisted of Octopus, Large Pig Offal and Turkey Kidney.

I happily started feasting on these awesome skewered delicacies. My favourite was the Octopus tentacles! They were wonderfully chewy, fresh and juicy! It went perfectly with the savoury marinade, a super delicious sauce that elevated the taste of the octopus. The generous drizzle of feisty mustard sauce completed this perfect street food experience with its tangy-spicy flavour. I loved this street food that seemed simple but was actually quite complex with many different flavours.

Raevian didn’t want to eat the pig offal or turkey kidney, which was great because it meant more food for me. The Pig Offal was very chewy, though it was not as flavourful or tasty as the octopus tentacles. That said, it was still a satisfying treat, especially when paired with the marinade and mustard.

The Turkey Kidney had a slightly rougher texture and was also quite chewy, though not as much as the octopus and pig offal. It was quite tasty but also couldn’t really compare to the octopus. However, the scrumptious marinade and mustard sauce saved the day with this one.

Personally, I felt that the octopus tentacles were the most delicious among the three items. So I guess the wife was right (as usual) to skip the other two items.

Conclusion

While the street food scene in Hong Kong can’t really compare to those of Bangkok and Taiwan, at least there is Fei Jie Snacks Shop 肥姐小食店 which will definitely satisfy your street food craving. We are really happy to have chanced upon this awesome joint.
