Eiswelt Gelato – Super Adorable Emoji-Themed Gelatos in Harajuku, Tokyo

When planning our Tokyo trip, I came across the super adorable ice creams from Eiswelt Gelato in Harajuku. They looked ridiculously cute and we were really looking forward to check it out!

Eiswelt Gelato

Eiswelt Gelato is a new ice cream shop in Tokyo that sells adorable animal shaped gelatos. It is located at one end of the bustling Takeshita Street in Harajuku. This vibrant thoroughfare is home to plenty of awesome eateries.

The shop is famous for its cute animal-shaped gelatos. Some examples are Teddy, Piggy, Chicken, Bunny, etc. You can also order multi-flavour gelatos such as “3 Piggy” or “5 Piggy”. The popular Froggy flavour is only available at the Tokyo branch.

All the gelatos are freshly made in-store using original recipes.

Shop Owner is Young College Graduate from USA

Eiswelt Gelato’s first branch was founded in California by 23 year old Vyvy Hoang, a recent college graduate from UC Irvine. The Tokyo outlet is her second branch.

Hoang started the gelato shop in 2015 when she was still a student, juggling her studies and business simultaneously. She has since graduated.

In an interview with In The Know: Foodie, Hoang says that she was inspired by her childhood in Germany where “all the candy is super cute”, such as the classic Haribo gummy bears.

Three years after opening her first Eiswelt Gelato branch in California, Hoang opened her second branch in Harajuku, Tokyo on 13th September 2018.

Froggy

We decided to order the Froggy (580 Yen) because it is a Japan exclusive flavour. This character comes in three flavours: Mint, Green Tea, or Milk. We went with Green Tea.

This was probably the most adorable ice cream I had ever seen! I was impressed that the staff could conjure up such a cute creation within minutes.

However, to be honest, my expectation for the taste of the ice cream was pretty low because cute-looking food usually don’t taste very good.

Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised as I took my first bite of this Froggy gelato – it tasted great! It had a sweet green tea flavour, along with a smooth but firm texture.

Compared to normal ice cream, this gelato was less creamy and had a richer density. This is because Eiswelt Gelato uses whole milk to make its gelatos, while ice cream is made with cream.

It tucked at our heartstrings to eat this super cute gelato, but we definitely did not regret savouring this adorable and delicious treat!

Piggy

We also indulged in the Piggy (580 Yen), which comes in Strawberry or Strawberry Milk flavours. We chose Strawberry.

This gelato was so cute that we almost couldn’t bear to eat it! BUT I was very curious to find out what its snout was made of, so I quickly took a bite and realised it was a fluffy marshmallow.

The gelato had a nice strawberry flavour that was sweet but not overwhelming. It will suit people who do not have a sweet tooth.

Similar to the Froggy gelato, it wasn’t very creamy but was quite dense, and had a firm texture.

Conclusion

The ice creams from Eiswelt Gelato in Harajuku were the most adorable food we ate in Tokyo! AND they were really delicious too. However, if you are thinking of taking insta-worthy photos, you need to be quick since the gelatos melt quite fast. Our Froggy gelato was beginning to lose its eyes and nose as we were taking photos of it. Eiswelt Gelato is a must-try if you are in Tokyo!
