Ma Bo Lor Mee – Tasty and Cheap $2.50 Lor Mee With 8 Outlets, With Laksa And Fried Cutlet Options

I recently chanced upon Ma Bo Lor Mee at Boon Lay Place Food Village, and boy was I blown away by its delicious taste. After some googling, I realised that this is actually a very well-known lor mee stall in Singapore.

Ma Bo Lor Mee – Famous Lor Mee Stall in Singapore

Ma Bo Lor Mee is a lor mee stall in Singapore that has become very popular in recent years.

The original stall was founded at Hong Lim Food Centre in 2013 by Li Xia and her business partner.

The story goes that Li Xia’s friend brought some of her home-cooked fried rice and lor mee to a gathering one day, and Li Xia’s husband was so impressed by the food that he strongly suggested that Li Xia and her friend start a lor mee business together.

As they say, the rest is history. Ma Bo Lor Mee currently have eight outlets across Singapore (as of January 2019).

Ma Bo Lor Mee takes its gravy preparation very seriously. It is prepared with dang gui (female ginseng) and eight other Chinese herbs. The gravy is cooked the night before so that the flavours will be better infused. It takes around ten hours for the gravy to be fully cooked, and no MSG is used at all.

One thing I really like about Ma Bo Lor Mee is its very affordable price. Their signature lor mee costs just $2.50, while the most expensive item on the menu costs only $4.

Other than the standard lor mee, the stall also offers other tantalising items like Ma Bo Laksa, Chicken Cutlet Lor Mee, Fried Fish Lor Mee, etc. You can buy the fried fish nuggets à la carte too.

Ma Bo Lor Mee

I decided to check out their signature Ma Bo Lor Mee ($3.50). The smaller portion sells for $2.50.

This was one of the best lor mee I’ve eaten in Singapore.

Personally, I feel that the most important part of lor mee is its gravy, and Ma Bo Lor Mee’s gravy was simply delicious.

The luscious sauce had a wonderful savoury flavour that served as the foundation for the dish. It had perfect consistency and was neither too thick nor too mild. I added chili, vinegar and minced garlic to enhance the taste too.

For the small price I paid, I was treated to a surprisingly sumptuous portion of fried dory fish nuggets, fishcakes, ngoh hiang, braised eggs, and braised pork belly.

The fried fish was my favourite topping. It was fried to perfection, with a crispy golden brown skin enclosing sweet tender flesh inside.

I also really enjoyed eating the yellow noodles, which had a pleasant smooth texture and just the right amount of bite.

The pork belly and the rest of the ingredients were fresh and delicious too, coming together seamlessly to form a perfect bowl of lor mee!

Ma Bo Laksa

On a separate visit, I ordered the Ma Bo Laksa ($2.50). This came with fried dory fish, tau pok, and fishcakes (I requested for no beansprouts).

The laksa gravy had a very thick and luscious texture, and tasted richer and more savoury than usual laksa gravy.

On the whole this dish was definitely quite satisfying, and I really enjoyed eating the fried fish doused in laksa gravy. However, if I had to choose, I would still go for the signature Ma Bo Lor Mee.

Conclusion

I’m so happy to have discovered Ma Bo Lor Mee in Singapore. This was seriously one satisfying bowl of mouthwatering lor mee. Be prepared to queue because the stall is really popular, especially during peak hours. The business is currently expanding rapidly, so don’t be surprised to find one Ma Bo Lor Mee outlet near your house soon.
