Our Honest Review of McDonalds New Menu Items 2019 – Salted Egg Fries, Peach Pie, and Pandan Soft Serve
As the new year dawned upon us, we were greeted with news that McDonald’s Singapore would be introducing new limited edition items from today (03 Jan 19). The three new items are: Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries, Peach Pie and Pandan Soft Serve. The “Ha Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Drumlets” (inspired by prawn paste fried chicken) will be making a return as well. We tried all four items and this is our verdict! This article was updated on 13 Jan 2019 to include the Pandan Sundae.
Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries
Before trying the Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries, I had already read some negative reviews of it. Therefore, my expectations were pretty low as I put one sauce-laden fry into my mouth.
All I can say is, this is definitely not one of McDonald’s best invention. Actually, I do not recall if I’ve ever tasted any McDonald’s item that tasted worse.
First off, the sauce definitely did not taste like salted egg yolk. Instead, it had a weird tangy flavour that left an unpleasant aftertaste in my mouth. I immediately drank a large mouthful of coke to try and wash away the taste.
Just in case you still want to check it out, you can top up $1.20 with any set meal to get these “salted egg yolk” fries.
Peach Pie
The Peach Pie ($1.40) fared a lot better than the fries. The pinkish crust was savoury and crispy, and the “peach” fillings had a sweet taste punctuated by chewy jelly chunks.
While the filling was definitely not real peach and probably made from some kind of synthetic peach syrup, on the whole I felt the peach pie was still quite delicious (by McDonald’s standards).
Pandan Soft Serve
The Pandan Soft Serve ($1) tasted like.. pandan. McDonald’s did a good job of emulating the real pandan flavour. If you like the flavour of pandan, you will enjoy this soft serve. And for $1 this was quite worth it.
Pandan Sundae
The Pandan Sundae ($2) was my favourite among the new items! Somehow, the luscious hot chocolate fudge just went so well with the fragrant pandan soft serve. Mix the hot fudge with the soft serve well to really enjoy the sweet taste of this delicious sundae.
Ha Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Drumlets
This was the highlight of our meal! The Ha Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Drumlets were really delicious. The meat was savoury, tender and juicy. And it tasted like real prawn paste fried chicken sold at zi char stalls. It’s no wonder that McDonald’s has decided to bring back this item again.
