Megan’s Kitchen – Hong Kong Luxury Hotpot Restaurant With Top Quality Ingredients and Premium Wines
One of our most expensive meals in Hong Kong was at Megan’s Kitchen, an upscale Chinese hotpot restaurant. While it was probably not the most value-for-money steamboat meal, we definitely enjoyed the premium hotpot ingredients and great service.
Megan’s Kitchen
Megan’s Kitchen is popular with many celebrities. Can you spot Aaron Kwok?
Megan’s Kitchen is a Chinese restaurant well-known for its expensive but high quality Chinese hotpot.
This popular restaurant has won numerous accolades, such as being one of Hong Kong Tatler’s Best Restaurants for 2019, and being on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list for 7 consecutive years since 2012.
It is located on the fifth floor of Lucky Centre (樂基中心) in Wan Chai.
Hotpot Menu
The hotpot menu offers a variety of creative soup bases and a wide range of premium seafood, meat and vegetables. At first glance, we were quite overwhelmed by the dizzying number of choices. You can view the full menu here.
Based on our personal experience and other online reviews, below are some of the popular soup bases. If you can’t decide, Megan’s Kitchen allows you to have up to three flavours in one pot.
- Tomato & Crab Soup in Souffle Finish (HKD 238)
- English Oxtail Soup (HKD 168)
- Malaysia Satay Soup (HKD 158)
- Black Pepper & Salt Preserved Vegetable with Pig Tripe (HKD 168)
Below are some of the popular hotpot items:
- Fried Diced Tofu Coated with Salty Egg Yolk Paste (HKD 48)
- Korean Kimchi Dumplings 10 pcs (HKD 88)
- Rainbow Cuttlefish Balls 7 pcs (HKD 98)
- Beef with Black Truffle Dumplings (HKD 128)
- Japanese Black Pork Loin (HKD 238)
- Japanese A5 Grade Sirloin (HKD 468)
Cantonese Food and Wine Menu
Other than hotpot items, Megan’s Kitchen also has a Cantonese Food menu. However, most people usually visit the restaurant for hotpot.
If you are the type that enjoys pairing premium meat with wine, you will be happy to know that Megan’s Kitchen has an extensive wine list consisting of wines from France, USA, Australia, Japan, and China.
No-Frills Decor And Bustling Atmosphere
Me taking a picture with the condiments
The restaurant had a modest old-school decor, which is quite different from the more flamboyant designs of other upscale hotpot restaurants.
We visited on a Friday at around 8pm, and the restaurant was fully packed. Some of the customers were office workers enjoying their TGIFs, and there were also a few tables of families.
These customers must be pretty affluent because the wife and I only ordered four items and it already set us back more than HKD 600, but they seemed to be having constant servings of expensive seafood and other hotpot delicacies.
Great Service
We enjoyed very good service at Megan’s Kitchen. The staff were all polite and we didn’t have any problems getting their attention at all.
But I guess this was to be expected since we were paying such a high premium for the meal.
We were also impressed to see that the restaurant staff were dressed smartly in black suits. Considering that this was a hotpot joint, I wondered if they were perspiring profusely beneath their blazers.
But after sitting down for a while, I realised that the restaurant had really strong air-conditioning, so make sure you bring a jacket if you’re afraid of the cold.
Condiments
Before the meal started, we were given two “wheels” of condiments to create our own sauces. This was charged at HKD 20 per person.
It was fun to mix and match our own sauce, but I must say this was one rather expensive sauce.
Pickled Cucumbers (Appetiser)
We were served a small plate of Pickled Cucumbers, which served as a nice appetiser. We thought this was free but it was charged in the bill for HKD 18.
Black Pepper & Salt Preserved Vegetable with Pig Tripe
For our soup base, we went with the Black Pepper & Salt Preserved Vegetable with Pig Tripe (HKD 168).
We chose this soup flavour because it combines three great ingredients that we really like: black pepper, salted vegetables, and pig stomach. It’s pretty hard to go wrong with this combination!
Indeed, the soup base was perfect for cooking our hotpot items. The feisty combination of spicy, salty, sour and savoury flavours was super satisfying!
Rainbow Cuttlefish Balls
Starting from the single yellow ball going clockwise: Yellow Bell Peppers, Purple Sweet Potato, Spring Onion, Red Bell Peppers.
The Rainbow Cuttlefish Balls 7 pcs (HKD 98) consists of seven cuttlefish balls, and we got to choose the flavour of each piece.
After thinking for a while, we ordered one Yellow Bell Peppers Cuttlefish Ball, two Purple Sweet Potato Cuttlefish Balls, two Spring Onion Cuttlefish Balls, and two Red Bell Peppers Cuttlefish Balls.
These cuttlefish balls were really fresh and chewy. They tasted wonderful with the savoury soup base!
My favourite was the spring onion, because it had a nice refreshing flavour. The wife preferred the purple sweet potato due to its distinctive flavour.
Hand Beaten Cuttlefish Paste
Me squeezing out the cuttlefish goodness
The Hand Beaten Cuttlefish Paste (HKD 128) is a must-order hotpot item for us. There is nothing quite as satisfying as eating these soft and tender chunks of delicious paste.
As expected, Megan’s Kitchen cuttlefish paste was very fresh. It had a slippery luscious texture that felt wonderful in my mouth. And it had soaked up the flavour of the soup base so it tasted super delicious!
Pork Shoulder
For meat, we ordered the Pork Shoulder (HKD 98). This was served in thin slices with beautiful marbling.
The pork meat was really fresh and tender, with no gamey odour at all. And it was also really juicy, perhaps due to the high marbling of the meat.
Free Range Chicken Thigh
The Free Range Chicken Thigh (HKD 148) was really succulent and satisfying. It definitely tasted a lot better than the usual chicken meat served at other hotpot restaurants. It was probably because this was high quality “free range” chicken (which explains its high price as well).
Conclusion
Megan’s Kitchen is located on the fifth floor of this building (Lucky Centre)
On the whole, we had a very satisfying hotpot dinner at Megan’s Kitchen. The food was absolutely top quality and fantastic, and service was great too. If you’re coming with a big group, you can even dine in the VIP room.
The downside was obviously the high price. For the amount we spent, we could have ordered a lot more items at a less expensive hotpot restaurant.
Therefore, I recommend visiting this restaurant if you have deep pockets and enjoy eating hotpot with delicious premium ingredients. If not, you will probably find it more worthwhile to dine at a hotpot joint with slightly lower quality ingredients, but at a significantly cheaper price.
And make sure you call to make reservations before going down, because the restaurant is really popular during peak hours.
