Carlton Europe – Homely Swiss Hotel in Interlaken, Switzerland
This is my full review of Carlton Europe Vintage Adults Hotel, a boutique hotel located in Interlaken, Switzerland. We stayed here for one night before moving to our airbnb in Wengen.
Carlton Europe Vintage Adults Hotel
Carlton Europe Hotel is a quaint hotel located near the Interlaken Ost Station. This longstanding hotel has a history that can be traced back to over 120 years ago.
It is currently owned by hospitality company Bernensis Hotel AG, who bought over the “Hotel Villa Europe” in 2001.
A few years later, Bernensis Hotel AG also purchased the neighbouring hotel “Carlton”. From then on, the two hotels were merged to become the Carlton Europe Hotel.
Carlton Europe is built in a classic European architectural style. Personally I felt the hotel was beautiful and had an old world charm to it.
Wonderful Location
The hotel is just a few minutes walk from Interlaken Ost train station
What I like most about the hotel is its excellent location. It is just a few minutes’ walk away from the Interlaken Ost Station, boat cruise dock, and Harder Kulm cable car station.
The wife and I arrived by train in Interlaken from Paris at around 8.30pm. By then, it was already dark and we were feeling quite tired after the long train ride.
Therefore, it was great that the hotel was located near the train station, so that we didn’t have to drag our luggage for a long distance in the dark.
The hotel is also near the Interlaken (See) boat dock. Hence, we managed to catch our cruise on Lake Brienz even though we left our hotel just 15 minutes before the boat departure.
Friendly Hotel Staff
The hotel receptionist who processed our check in was quite friendly and offered us a cold welcome drink. She was wearing a traditional Swiss dress which was pretty cool.
However, when I asked her some questions about the hotel, her replies were quite curt. I got the feeling that she just wanted to complete the check in as quickly as possible.
During breakfast the next day, service was very good. The staff were all very attentive and friendly.
During check out, I was served by a different female receptionist who was very nice and helpful. She had a pleasant smile and helped us with our heavy luggage.
Vintage Room
We were given a room on the third floor, along with an interesting old-school key with a large brass handle.
The wife and I took the spacious lift up to our floor, and were surprised to see that the lights in the hallway were not switched on.
I managed to find the switch and turn on the lights. After that, we entered our room quickly.
Our “Classic Room” was quite clean and comfortable. It was decorated with pretty vintage wooden furniture.
The king-size bed was comfy, but for some reason we were given two single blankets. I thought this was a little strange, but on the bright side the wife and I wouldn’t have to fight over the blanket.
The bathroom was very bright and clean. It had all the necessary amenities such as towels, hair dryer, toiletries, etc.
The bathing cubicle was quite a squeeze, but the shower pressure was great. The “hand and body shampoo” provided had a nice fragrance.
It felt really good to take a warm and relaxing bath in the bathroom after my long train ride.
There is no air conditioning, which I believe is the case for most hotels in the Bernese Oberland region. However, this was not a problem at all.
I simply left one of the windows slightly ajar and the room became very cool after a short while.
There was a small balcony, which had two chairs and a small table. However, it was very cloudy during our stay so we didn’t really have much of a view.
We enjoyed free and stable wifi in the room.
Excellent Hotel Breakfast
Group dining area
International Spread
Cheese and fruits
Pastries and jams
Coffee machine
Egg machine
Beautiful outdoor dining area
The next morning, we had breakfast in the spacious hotel restaurant. It was beautifully decorated in classic Swiss style.
There was even a lovely outdoor dining area overlooking the turquoise hotel pool, but unfortunately it was raining so we couldn’t sit outside.
After getting seated, we were served with hot coffee and tea by the friendly and attentive staff.
I was pleasantly surprised by the sumptuous breakfast spread in this small hotel! There was a great selection of rosti, sausages, hams, scrambled eggs, bacon, pasta, cheese, muesli, yogurt, cereals, pastries and more.
There was an even an egg machine, something which I had never seen before.
The food were all very fresh and delicious. The wife and I both enjoyed the breakfast very much. In fact, we spent so much time eating here that we almost missed our cruise on Lake Brienz.
Other Amenities
Carlton Europe is also home to an outdoor swimming pool, spa and pool table. However, the wife and I didn’t have time to use these facilities. And anyways it was still too cold to swim in the pool when we visited in April.
Conclusion
The wife and I had a pleasant one night stay at Carlton Europe Hotel in Interlaken, Switzerland. This is a good value-for-money hotel suitable for short stays. We stayed at the hotel in mid-April and paid about CHF 173 for one night.
