D Life 蔬食

D’Life is a restaurant that serves a large variety of creative vegetarian dishes. It has three branches in Singapore, located at Jurong West, Chun Tin Road (Bukit Timah), and Toa Payoh.

I visited the Jurong West branch, which is a no-frills restaurant where customers dine on wooden tables and chairs.

Even though it is located at a relatively obscure location in Jurong West, the restaurant started filling up quickly with customers once lunch peak hour started approaching.

When I arrived at 12.15pm on a weekday the restaurant was still quite empty. However, by 12.45pm it was almost fully packed.

Note that on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, D Life is extremely busy during peak hours. I recently had to wait one hour for my food to be served when I went down on the 1st of the lunar month.

Menu + Popular Dishes (Click to Enlarge)

The menu offers a variety of Vegetables, Mushrooms, Tofu, Hotplates, Fried Rice, Soup, Noodles, and Mock Meats like “fish” and “prawn” dishes. There are even pizza and spaghetti items, which should appeal to children.

Some of the recommended dishes include the Thai Style Curry Hotpot ($12), Sambal Four Heavenly King ($10), Signature Nasi Lemak ($4.80), Hokkien Mee ($4.80), and Yam Ring ($14.30).

Sizzling Hotplate Tofu

The Sizzling Hotplate Tofu ($8) was really delicious. The tofu was soft and smooth, and tasted great with the savoury gravy. There were chunks of “meat” and mushrooms inside the gravy too.

D’life Signature Fried Rice

The D’life Signature Fried Rice ($7.50) was good too. It was served warm and was very fragrant. I liked that the rice wasn’t too oily.

Ginger & Egg Mee Sua Soup

I really liked the Ginger & Egg Mee Sua Soup ($6). The soup base was savoury with a sharp ginger taste, and the mee sua had a slippery smooth texture. Together with the vegetables and eggs, this was a satisfying soupy dish. However, do not order this dish if you do not like ginger.

Bak Gu Teh ($7.50)

My favourite dish was the Bak Gu Teh ($7.50)! I loved the rich herbal fragrance and slight feistiness of the broth. As for the “pork ribs”, they didn’t exactly taste like real meat, but they were firm and tasty. I liked the enoki mushrooms and red dates too.

Sambal Four Heavenly King

For my vegetable dish, I had the Sambal Four Heavenly King ($10). It was tasty and feisty, and I especially liked the petai beans.

Conclusion

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the vegetarian food at D Life tasted. In fact, it felt like I was eating at a typical zi char restaurant. The meal was also very affordable; my bill for two persons came up to just $29. I will definitely be returning soon to check out their other dishes.
