Bai Yun Restaurant (Bangkok) – All You Can Eat Dim Sum Buffet With Stunning Views of The City

While researching for places to eat in Bangkok, I came across Bai Yun, a Chinese restaurant known for its sumptuous dim sum buffet. The online reviews seemed decent and the restaurant offers a kick-ass view of Bangkok, so I decided to check it out.

Bai Yun

Bai Yun is a classy Chinese restaurant in Bangkok that serves Cantonese-style dishes and dim sum. It is known for its sumptuous dim sum buffet.

Located on the 59th floor of Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel, the restaurant offers panoramic aerial views of the city.

The famous Vertigo Rooftop Bar is located a few floors up on the 63rd floor.

The menu features a variety of classic Cantonese-style dishes, premium tea, and dim sum items. The restaurant also offers an a la carte dim sum buffet.

The dim sum lunch buffet (11.30am to 2.30pm) is priced at THB1,295 on weekdays and THB1,650 on weekends. The dim sum dinner buffet (6pm to 10.30pm) is priced at THB1,650.

I only took pictures of the dim sum items, but you can see the full menu here.

We bought the dim sum buffet through Klook because it was way cheaper at just THB900.

Magnificent Views, Classy Ambience, Good Service

Private dining room

I had made reservations for 6.30pm on a Sunday and the restaurant was almost empty when the wife and I went down. We were given a table by the window.

From our seats, we enjoyed amazing aerial views of Bangkok through the floor to ceiling windows. I could see all the way to the Pratunam and Siam districts!

I walked to the opposite side of the restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it offered an unobstructed view of the iconic Chao Phraya river.

As the sun began to set, the city was covered with a warm orange glow. After it became dark, the city night lights were beautiful.

The overall atmosphere of Bai Yun is a mix of classy oriental charm and contemporary elements, with traditional Chinese furnishings, dimmed lighting by linen cloth chandeliers, and quirky water features with psychedelic lights.

The restaurants has spacious private rooms for larger groups.

I was happy with the service here. The staff serving us spoke English (though not super fluently), and was enthusiastic about recommending us dishes and the rooftop bar with “very good” views upstairs.

Sumptuous Dim Sum Buffet

The wife and I are both fans of dim sum, so we decided to go for the a la carte dim sum buffet. One tip: you might want to keep track of the items you order. We ordered a variety (read: a lot) of dim sums and the staff got one of our orders wrong.

The staff served us some complimentary soup in the middle of our meal, but we declined because we didn’t want to waste any stomach space.

Below are brief reviews of all the dim sums we ordered. (Yes we are gluttons, but hey it’s a buffet right? Don’t judge please.)

Crisp Tofu Sheet, Seafood Combination

We got off to a good start with this crispy and savoury dish. It’s hard to go wrong with fried tofu skin.

Crab Claw, Curry Sauce

Unfortunately, this sounded better than it tasted. I didn’t really like the tangy taste of the curry sauce.

Steamed Shrimp Dumpling, Shrimp Roe

I enjoyed eating this classic dim sum, and the shrimp roe added a salty flavour.

Steamed Sea Scallop, Chilli, Salt

This was surprisingly delicious. The scallops were fresh and succulent, and the mushrooms had a pleasant chewy texture.

Steamed Minced Pork, Prawn and Shiitake Mushroom Dumpling

This was quite delicious. The minced pork, prawns and mushrooms were all very fresh.

Egg York in Crystal Bun

This is one of the recommended items but it was not worth the calories at all. The “crystal” bun skin was gooey and difficult to chew. Skip this please.

Crispy Blue Crab Claw

This is our favourite dim sum dish! The crab meat was juicy and tender, and it was covered in a crispy layer of savoury fried breadcrumbs. The luscious mayonnaise sauce completed the experience.

Crisp Shrimp, Fruit Salad

The savoury fried shrimp was balanced by the refreshing fruits. It was pretty delicious.

Steamed Bacon, Enoki, Chinese Chilli Sauce

I like bacon and I like enoki, so I may be biased when I say that this dish is very satisfying. The chilli sauce adds a tinge of heat.

Steamed Abalone Dumpling

The abalone was fresh and chewy. Order this if you are fan of abalone.

Steamed Tofu, Snow Fish, Fermented Soy Bean

This dish was executed very well. The tofu had a soft and delicate texture, and the snow fish had a tender and silky smooth texture. The fermented soy bean added a tangy-savoury taste. Highly recommended.

Steamed Broccoli, Minced Shrimp, Black Pepper Sauce

The wife ordered this dim sum because from the menu picture she thought the dark specks were black pepper. It turned out to be broccoli and I had to eat both pieces because she is not a fan of broccoli. I found it to be quite delicious, but do not order if you dislike broccoli.

Fried Lychee, Crab Meat

This was decent but not fantastic.

Steamed Pork Ribs, Chinese Olive

I like eating steamed pork ribs, and Bai Yun does not disappoint with their version. The meat was tender and the savoury sauce was tasty.

Steamed Seaweed, Minced Shrimp, Spicy Garlic Sauce

We ended our dim sum feast with this interesting and delicious dim sum. The minced shrimp was fresh and went well with the seaweed and savoury garlic sauce.

Xin Yang Mao Jian
The enthusiastic staff serving our table recommended us the Xin Yang Mao Jian (信阳毛尖) green tea. According to the menu, the tea leaves come “from the youngest part of the tea tree”, and therefore it has a “smooth and fresh sweet taste”.

True enough, the tea had a very smooth texture and a delicately sweet fragrance. It was perfect for washing down our heavy meal.

Conclusion

I had a very pleasant dining experience at Bai Yun restaurant in Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel. The dim sums were generally quite delicious, and I got to enjoy stunning views, excellent ambience, and good service. If you are going for the dim sum buffet, make sure you buy from Klook because it costs just THB900 instead of THB1650 (almost a 50% discount). You can check out the famous Vertigo rooftop bar upstairs after your dim sum feast.
