Thian Song Roast Duck (Bangkok) – Super Delicious Roast Duck Found at Dinso Road!

I am always happy to discover new awesome eateries in Bangkok, and during my recent trip I was happy to come across Thian Song Roast Duck, which serves one of the best roast ducks I have ever eaten!

Thian Song Roast Duck

Thian Song Roast Duck is a hole-in-the-wall street restaurant in Bangkok famous for its delicious roast duck. It is located at a dingy shophouse along Dinso Road, directly opposite City Hall (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration).

This restaurant has been around for over 70 years and is very popular with locals.

It is also known as “Thian Song Ped Yang” or “Tien Song Ped Yang”. Ped Yang is the Thai word for roast duck.

The restaurant is also known for its fragrant coffee and toasted bread with orange kaya, so it’s a good spot for breakfast too.

Old School Restaurant with Friendly Staff

Thian Song Roast Duck is an old-school Chinese style restaurant, where customers dine on wooden tables and chairs with ceiling fans whirring overhead.

The wife and I went down on a Sunday at around 12.30pm and the restaurant was almost fully packed. But luckily we managed to get a table immediately.

Looking around, I believe we were the only tourists in the restaurant. The rest of the customers consisted of young Thai adults, students, and some elderly folks chilling out over coffee.

Service was surprisingly good. The staff were very friendly and patient when taking our orders. The food was served fast too.

To be honest, I had half expected them to be rude / discriminate against us because we were tourists.

On the downside, the staff only understood very basic English words, so I had to use a combination of hand gestures and Google Translate when communicating with them.

Personally, I feel that Thian Song is a well-managed restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere.

Only the Thai menu has prices indicated

The restaurant’s signature dish is their roast duck (listed as “grilled duck” on the menu). There are also roast duck dishes such as roast duck rice, roast duck noodles, duck wings, duck tongues, etc.

Other than roast duck, the menu also offers a whole variety of other dishes: pig trotter rice, roast pork, BBQ pork, chicken rice, soy sauce noodles, fish maw soup, seafood dishes, grilled squids, Thai style salad, dim sum, Chinese dumplings, etc.

As mentioned earlier, Thian Song also offers breakfast options like coffee, tea, milk, chocolate, and toasted bread with orange kaya.

For alcohol, there is a variety of beers and even whisky.

That is one varied menu!

Most of the dishes are quite cheap, ranging between THB40 and THB100.

Note that only the Thai menu has the prices, so we had to do a cross reference with the English menu to check the prices.

Roast Duck Soup Noodles

I wanted to order the Roast Duck Rice, but unfortunately it was already sold out.

The staff recommended me (with some difficulty due to her limited English proficiency) to try the Roast Duck Noodles (THB40) instead.

Thian Song is known for its roast duck, so I was surprised that the noodles tasted really good. They had a smooth and springy texture, with just the right amount of bite.

The soup was delicious too, not too oily and with a pleasant savoury flavour.

The highlight was of course the roast duck! The roasted skin was crisp and tasty, and the meat was tender, juicy, and savoury. I was impressed that it didn’t have any gamey odour at all.

The vegetables and chunk of winter melon were fresh and juicy, and helped to sweeten the soup base.

I also added some Thai condiments (chilli flakes, sugar, green chilli), which helped to further elevate and enhance the flavours.

On the whole, this simple dish was well-executed and very satisfying!

Roast Duck Dry Noodles

The wife had the Roast Duck Dry Noodles (THB40). Similarly, the noodles had great bite and the duck was super delicious.

Both the soup and dry versions were awesome, but personally I preferred the soup noodles.

Conclusion

Thian Song Roast Duck is a hidden gem in Bangkok that all foodies should check out. It serves one of the best roast ducks I have ever eaten. The food is also extremely affordable – our meal only cost THB80 in total. I’m looking forward to try the restaurant’s other dishes the next time I visit Bangkok. Incidentally, Thian Song is just a few doors down from popular Thai restaurant Krua Apsorn, which unfortunately was closed when we went down on a Sunday.
