K Fry Urban Korean Holiday Villa – Super Satisfying Korean Fried Chicken Near KSL City Mall
I am a fan of Korean fried chicken, so I was happy to discover K Fry Urban Korean at Holiday Villa in Johor Bahru. This restaurant is very popular with both locals and tourists. This article was last updated on 19 May 2020.
K Fry Urban Korean
Chicken Bumbuk
K Fry Urban Korean is a popular Muslim-friendly Korean restaurant located at Holiday Villa Hotel, beside KSL City Mall in JB.
It is most famous for its delicious Korean fried chicken dishes.
Other than the Johor Bahru outlet, there are also four other branches in Petaling Jaya, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Batu Pahat.
Great Ambience and Decent Service
This spacious industrial-themed restaurant has a casual vibe with catchy K-pop tunes playing in the background.
You can sit at the brightly-lit area by the window, or at the stylish section decorated with neon lights.
Service was decent. The staff were generally quite polite, though I had problems getting their attention sometimes.
I was impressed to see that there was even an elevator for wheelchair-bound customers.
We went at 4.30pm on a Saturday and the place was almost fully packed. I’ve heard that it gets even busier during peak hours so try to go early to avoid the queue.
“No Pork No Lard No Alcohol” Policy
According to K Fry’s website, they are currently not officially halal-certified.
However, they follow a strict “No Pork No Lard No Alcohol policy”, and only get their ingredients from Halal-certified suppliers.
They are in the process of getting the Halal application, and are committed to doing so as fast as possible.
Notwithstanding their non-Halal status, judging from the number of Muslim diners we saw in the restaurant, it’s safe to say K Fry is extremely popular with Muslims.
Menu (Click to enlarge)
The menu offers a huge variety of tantalising Korean dishes, including Korean Fried Chicken, Korean Army Stews, Cheese Baked Rice, Ginseng Chicken Soup, Japchae, Korean Pancakes, Bingsoos, and more.
They also offer fruit-flavour “beers” and “mojitos” with zero alcohol content.
Their signature dish is the Chicken Bumbuk (RM52.90), which consists of fried chicken and french fries served with mozzarella cheese.
Kimgaru Fries
To start things off, we ordered the Kimgaru Fries (RM9.90), which are thin-cut fries topped with generous amounts of seaweed flakes. They were pretty delicious and served as a good appetiser.
K Fry Nude Chicks
The K Fry Nude Chicks (RM28.90) consists of around 10 to 12 pieces of original-flavour fried chicken.
The chicken pieces were tender, juicy and tasty! I liked that the fried skins were not overly oily, so that I did not feel too queasy afterwards.
They were even more delicious when eaten with the mustard and chilli sauce.
Other than the original flavour, there are various other flavours like Garlic Soya, Yangnyeom, Spicy Soya, Spicy Yangnyeom, and Honey Butter.
K Fry Garlic Soya Chicks
We also tried the K Fry Garlic Soya Chicks (RM29.90), which are fried chicken chunks dipped in garlic infused Korean soy sauce.
These were quite delicious too, but I wasn’t really a fan of the garlic soy sauce taste, because it seemed to mask the fragrance of the fried chicken. Personally I preferred the original flavour K Fry Nude Chicks more.
Cheesy Fried Chicken Bumbuk
The highlight of our meal was the Cheesy Fried Chicken Bumbuk (RM52.90)! This sumptuous dish consists of boneless fried chicken thigh meat mixed with mozzarella cheese. It is topped with a generous portion of thick-cut fries.
We ordered two flavours: Original and Honey Mustard.
First, the staff heated up the mozzarella cheese at our table to create a super mouthwatering cheese pull.
After that, he wrapped the fried chicken chunks with the melted cheese.
This dish definitely had great presentation and drama, and the fried chicken tasted quite good with the mozzarella cheese. However, it was not as delicious as I had expected. Perhaps my expectations were too high.
Out of all of the fried chicken dishes we tried, I actually preferred the original flavour fried chicken (without cheese) the best. I guess sometimes simple is better.
Japchae
For carbs, we had Japchae (RM18.90). These stir-fried Korean glass noodles were lightly savoury with a nice bite. They were quite delicious and served as a nice complement to the fried chicken dishes.
Lychee Rita
I washed down all the fried chicken goodness with a large Lychee Rita (RM18.90). This fancy drink consists of a bottle of Apple Barbican Soda (non-alcoholic beer) mixed with lychee slushie.
While I would have preferred real beer, it was still super satisfying to drink this ice-cold beer-flavoured slushie while eating savoury Korean fried chicken.
Mango Rita
We also ordered the Mango Rita (RM18.90), which is Lemon Barbican Soda blended with mango slushie. Compared to the Lychee Rita, this had a thicker texture and richer flavour. Order if you are fan of mango.
Other than Lychee and Mango, there are also Peach, Strawberry, Mango, and Ocean Rita (citrus) flavours.
Honey Yuja Tea (Cold)
Honey Yuja Tea (RM5.50) is a cold sweet drink with the pleasant fragrance of yuzu. I recommend ordering this if you want something light and refreshing to cleanse your palate.
Conclusion
After visiting K Fry Urban Korean Holiday Villa, I can understand why it has so many raving reviews. The restaurant offers delicious Korean fried chicken, great ambience, reasonable prices and good service. It is the perfect place in Johor Bahru to get your KFC fix!
