Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee – Famous Prawn Noodles House At Geylang Lor 1, With “Michelin Plate” Award
After trying the delicious prawn noodles at Blanco Court Prawn Mee, I was excited to check out Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee, which is another famous prawn noodles eatery in Singapore.
Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee is a prawn noodles restaurant at Jalan Ayer Road, just off Geylang Lorong 1. It is a two-minute walk from Kallang MRT Station.
They were awarded the “Michelin Plate” in the Singapore Michelin Guide 2019, which is a sign of recognition for restaurants that have not yet earned their Bib Gourmand or Michelin Star.
Foodies will know that this eatery is actually part of the Lee family “prawn noodles empire”, along with Blanco Court Prawn Mee, Blanco Prawn Noodle House, Beach Road Prawn Mee and Joo Chiat Prawn Mee.
Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee is a no-frills eatery where customers dine on plain tables and plastic chairs. There is no air-conditioning, but there are plenty of ceiling fans to keep the place cool.
The staff here are not as friendly as their counterparts at Blanco Court Prawn Mee, so don’t be surprised by their cold attitude.
There is also a ngoh hiang stall inside the small coffeeshop, which has many good reviews online.
Menu
The simple menu offers five items:
1. Prawn Mee ($6) – prawns of varying sizes
2. Pork Ribs Prawn Mee ($5) – prawns of varying sizes, and pork ribs
3. King Prawn Pork Ribs Noodle ($8/$10) – king prawns and pork ribs
4. Sultan Prawn Noodle ($10) – king prawns only
5. Pig Tail Pork Ribs Soup ($6/$8) – pig tail and pork ribs
Other than the Pig Tail Pork Ribs Soup, all the dishes are available in soup or dry.
Incidentally, I’m not sure why the auntie at the cashier told me that the Prawn Mee ($6) dish only contained “small prawns”, which I found to be untrue when researching for this article.
You need to tell the cashier your table number when ordering, so that they can deliver the prawn noodles to you.
King Prawn Pork Ribs Noodle
I ordered the King Prawn Pork Ribs Noodle ($8) with soup and yellow noodles. It was served almost immediately after I ordered.
I tried the broth first, which was tasty but lacked a certain level of richness. The fried shallots inside added an oily aftertaste rather than enhance the dish’s flavour.
The prawns looked good, but unfortunately they were not really very tender or fresh.
I actually enjoyed the pork ribs the most, which were juicy and flavourful with a soft texture.
Conclusion
Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee has garnered many wonderful reviews over the years, so I was surprised that their prawn noodles didn’t taste as good as expected. Maybe the standard has dropped over the years?
