Beach Road Prawn Mee – Famous Prawn Noodles House At East Coast Road, One Of The Best In Singapore

After hearing many raves about Beach Road Prawn Mee, I was excited to check it out for myself. And so on a Saturday morning, I made my way to this eatery in the East.

Beach Road Prawn Mee is a famous prawn noodle house that occupies two shophouses along East Coast Road.

This prawn noodle house is extremely popular with Singaporeans. I visited on a Saturday at 11am and the eatery was almost fully packed.

You may be wondering why the restaurant is named “Beach Road Prawn Mee” even though it is located at East Coast Road.

The reason is because the founder, Mr John Lee is the son of Mr Lee Seng Hoon, the boss of Blanco Court Prawn Mee at Beach Road.

John learned the business from his father and opened his own prawn noodle eatery at East Coast Road in 1986. He named it “Beach Road Prawn Mee” as a tribute to his father’s restaurant.

Incidentally, it was John who introduced the practice of eating prawn noodles with jumbo prawns in Singapore. Before that, prawn noodles were served with small de-shelled prawns and thin pork slices.

Fast forward 34 years later, Beach Road Prawn Mee is now a spacious no-frills coffee shop where customers dine on wooden tables and plastic chairs. There is no air-conditioning but the airy space is kept cool by ceiling fans operating at full blast.

There were around 10 people ahead of me in line when I reached at 11am, but the queue moved fast and I reached the counter within 5 minutes.

The ordering system was super efficient: I placed my order, gave the staff my table number, then went back to wait at my table. The prawn noodles were served just 5 minutes later. Impressive.

If you are driving, note that there is very limited street side parking here. And there are only a few public carparks with limited lots in the vicinity.

The simple menu offers prawn mee only, and you can choose to add on pork ribs or pig tails. Both soup and dry versions are available.

All options come with big prawns, other than the Jumbo Prawn Mee which comes with well, jumbo prawns.

Remember to request for no bean sprouts if you do not like this vegetable, because it is included by default.

For first timers, I recommend getting the Prawn With Pork Ribs Mee soup, as this is one of their most popular dishes.

Prices are reasonable, ranging between $6 and $12. You can pay using QR code, which was what I did.

If you’re interested, you can buy their homemade concoction of Fried Onion, Lard, and Chilli Powder for $4.50 each.

You can also buy drinks from the same counter when ordering your prawn noodles.

East Coast Ngoh Hiang

Like many other prawn noodle eateries, Beach Road Prawn Mee is home to a ngoh hiang stall too. It has many positive online reviews but I didn’t manage to try the ngoh hiang that day.

Prawn With Pork Ribs Mee

I ordered the Prawn With Pork Ribs Mee ($9) soup with yellow noodles, bee hoon, and no bean sprouts. It arrived in just 5 minutes.

After hearing so many good reviews about this, I was sorely hoping not to be disappointed.

Luckily, my trip here was not wasted. The broth was full-bodied and flavourful with a pleasant crustacean aroma. The fried shallots added flavour and texture. Very satisfying!

The broth tasted similar to the one I tried at Blanco Court Prawn Mee, but with a saltier taste. Both versions are good, so it’s really just a matter of preference. Personally, I preferred Blanco Court’s broth, but the wife enjoyed Beach Road’s one more.

The prawn noodles came with two halved pieces of prawns, which were very fresh and came off the shells easily. The meat was firm, bouncy, and crunchy. It was really good – in fact it was the best among all the prawn noodles I’ve tried!

The prawn ribs tasted wonderful too. They were juicy and flavourful with every bite, and I loved their fall-off-the-bone tenderness. Again, this is probably the best prawn-noodles-pork-ribs I have eaten in Singapore.

Conclusion

Beach Road Prawn Mee serves up an amazing bowl of prawn noodles – the broth was robust, the prawns were crunchy, and the pork ribs were super tender. My only qualm was that for $9, I expected more than just two halved pieces of prawns. Nonetheless, it was still one of the best prawn noodles I’ve had in Singapore.
