Soh Kee Cooked Food – Super Tender Chicken & Comforting Cantonese Porridge At Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre

Recently, I checked out a popular stall at Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre: Soh Kee Cooked Food. They sell poached chicken, but instead of pairing it with the usual chicken rice, they serve it with porridge instead. Update 14 Aug 2021: congratulations to Soh Kee for making it into Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand list this year – truly well deserved!

Soh Kee Cooked Food serves Cantonese style porridge, which is double-boiled to give it a super smooth texture.

They get their chickens daily from the adjacent wet market, therefore their chicken meat is always very tender and fresh.

Soh Kee is best known for their chicken and porridge sets, which starts from just $3.50 for one pax.

They also sell Chicken Porridge ($2), Fish Porridge ($3), Cuttlefish Porridge ($3) and Abalone Yusheng ($5, $7, $10).

As you can tell, the prices are very reasonable.

Chicken And Porridge Set (2 pax)

I ordered the 2 Pax Chicken and Porridge Set ($7). The portion of chicken meat was generous considering the price.

The meat was tender and moist, and tasted wonderful with the soy sauce and sesame oil mix. Don’t forget to dip the chicken in the feisty chilli sauce too!

The porridge was silky smooth with perfect consistency. The spring onions and ground white pepper toppings added flavour.

The true enjoyment comes from eating the chicken together with the congee – a super satisfying experience!

Note that the porridge can get slightly runny after a while. If you prefer a thicker texture, the trick is to NOT stir the porridge. Instead, use your spoon to gently scrap the top layers of the congee.

Conclusion

Soh Kee Cooked Food has been consistently serving delicious porridge and chicken for many years. It is easy to find them in the hawker centre – just look for the stall with a snaking long queue!
