TENYA – Famous Japanese Tendon Chain At Orchard Central Serves Quality Tempura Rice Bowls From $7.90++
If you’re hanging out in town and looking for an affordable Japanese joint with tasty food, check out Tempura Tendon Tenya Singapore at Orchard Central.
Tenya is a Japanese restaurant chain known for their quality tempura rice bowls sold at affordable prices.
Founded in Tokyo in 1989, it now has 226 outlets across Japan, as well as branches in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines.
In October this year, Tenya opened their first Singapore outlet at basement one of Orchard Central.
I liked the casual vibe of this brightly lit restaurant, where you can choose to dine on tables, booths or the communal table.
I sat at the long communal table, and was intrigued by the overhead LED screen that displayed animated scenes of the underwater world.
I was also amused by the cute robots that helped to serve food to the customers.

Tenya offers a variety of tantalising Tempura Donburis (Tempura Rice Bowls), with prices starting from just $7.90.
If you prefer eating noodles, the menu also features tempura with noodles (udon or soba). Tenya serves the Inaniwa Udon, a special type of udon that is thinner than the regular plump udon.
Go for the set meals if you want to try both the tendon and noodles. Personally, I recommend ordering the set meals because they are quite value-for-money.
The menu also offers dessert items like the Hokkaido Soft Serve ($2) and Matcha Azuki Cake ($5.80).
Premium Tendon
The Premium Tendon ($10.90) comes with 2 prawns, squid, crabstick, pumpkin, lotus root, and french beans.
Covered in a coat of crunchy batter drizzled with tare sauce, all the tempura were fresh and tasty! My favourite was the prawn tempura which was plump and juicy.
The batter itself was crispy and light, and I appreciated that it was not too oily like those at some other tempura places in Singapore.
The tare sauce was sweet and not overly savoury, going well with the tempura. I wished they were more generous with the sauce though.
Prawn Tendon Set
I also tried the Prawn Tendon Set ($15.90), which comes with a serving of noodles.
The prawn tendon comes with 3 prawns, pumpkin, Shimeji mushroom, and french beans. For my noodles, I chose the hot Inaniwa Udon.
Like the Premium Tendon, the tempuras were delicious. The udon was tasty and chewy with a slippery-smooth texture.
Conclusion
Tenya can’t really be compared to the tempura restaurant I visited in Tokyo, but the tendon quality was excellent for the price I paid. The restaurant has great ventilation too, so I did not leave the restaurant smelling like tempura. I will certainly be visiting Tenya again soon.
