How to Go Toyosu Fish Market (formerly Tsukiji Fish Market) – Famous Tuna Auctions and Super Fresh Sushi!
In this article, I will be describing three methods to reach the new Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo. Among the three ways, I recommend taking the subway because that is the best method for most tourists – we used this method too. Make sure you get the Suica IC Card, which can be used to ride most Tokyo trains (including all the trains mentioned in this article). If you are not aware yet, the INNER Tsukiji Fish Market relocated to Toyosu in October 2018 and reopened as “Toyosu Market”. The OUTER Tsukiji Fish Market remains at its original location. You can find out more in our complete guide on Toyosu Fish Market.
Method 1: By Subway
It is quite easy to get to Toyosu Market using the subway, because the market is connected to Shijo-mae Station by an elevated walkway.
We enjoyed taking the subway because it was very convenient, and we got great views of Tokyo Bay and the Tokyo skyline when travelling on the Yurikamome Line to Shijo-mae Station.
We went to Toyosu Market from Shinjuku Station, but I will also be showing you how to get to the market from Shibuya Station and Ginza Station.
Step 1. Take the Subway to Shijo-mae Station
Go out from Toyosu Station Exit 7 towards Yurikamome Line
Enter through here to reach the Yurikamome Line
Take the Yurikamome Line for 2 stops to Shijo-Mae Station
From Shinjuku Station (40 minutes)
1. From Shinuku Station, we took the Marunouchi Line for 1 stop to Shinjuku-Sanchome Station
2. From Shinjuku-Sanchome Station, we took the Shinjuku Line for 2 stops to Ichigaya Station
3. From Ichigaya Station, we took the Yurakucho Line for 8 stops to Toyosu Station
4. From Toyosu Station, we went out from Exit 7 to the Yurikamome Line, and took it for 2 stops to Shijo-Mae Station
From Shibuya Station (35 minutes)
1. From Shibuya Station, take the Hanzomon Line for 3 stops to Nagatacho Station
2. From Nagatacho Station, take the Yurakucho Line for 6 stops to Toyosu Station
3. From Toyosu Station, go out from Exit 7 to the Yurikamome Line, and take it for 2 stops to Shijo-Mae Station
From Ginza Station (25 minutes)
1. From Ginza Station, walk about 400 metres to Ginza-itchōme Station
2. From Ginza-itchōme Station, take the Yurakucho Line for 3 stops to Toyosu Station
3. From Toyosu Station, go out from Exit 7 to the Yurikamome Line, and take it for 2 stops to Shijo-Mae Station
Step 2. Walk to Toyosu Market
Once you go out from the gantries at Shijo-Mae Station, you will immediately see the elevated walkway which is directly connected to the station. You can simply walk along the walkway to reach Toyosu Market.
The market is separated into three large buildings, and you can follow the signs along the walkway to get to the respective buildings. These are the three buildings:
- Block 5: Fruit and Vegetables Market
- Block 6: Fish Intermediate Wholesale Market
- Block 7: Fish Wholesale Market (tuna auctions)
We walked to Block 7 first because we wanted to check out the famous tuna auctions. The tuna auctions start at 5.30am, so when we reached at 7.30am the auction was already over.
However, we still managed to see the fishmongers sorting and transporting the large tunas, which was pretty interesting.
Unlike the previous location where tourists were allowed to be on the ground to observe the tuna auctions, Toyosu Market only allows visitors to view the wholesale market through glass windows on the first and second level.
Method 2: By Taxi
If you want to reach Toyosu Market early to see the tuna auction, or to queue at Sushi Dai / Daiwa Sushi, you will need to take a taxi. This is because the Tokyo subway only starts around 5am. The first train from Toyosu station reaches Shijo-mae station at 5.18am.
It is very easy to get a taxi after midnight; you can just hail one from the main road.
However, be warned that taxis in Tokyo are very expensive. A trip from Shinjuku Station to Toyosu Market, inclusive of midnight charge (assuming you are aiming to reach the market before 5am), will easily cost around 80 USD. If you are travelling from Ginza Station, it will cost around 40 USD.
You can use this Tokyo taxi fare calculator to estimate the cost.
Method 3: By Boat
If you are interested, you can take the Himiko Tokyo Boat Cruise from Odaiba Seaside Park to Toyosu. The boat ride takes about 20 minutes and costs 780 yen for adults.
This is definitely not the most efficient way to reach the market, but it offers paranomic scenic views of Tokyo Bay through the dome glass windows on the futuristic-looking boat. You can find out more details here.
Conclusion
As mentioned, the best way to get to Toyosu Market is by taking the subway as it is very affordable and convenient.
However, if you want to go to the market early (before 5am), you can catch a taxi, though you should know that Tokyo taxis are infamously expensive.

2 Comments and Questions
Hi! Quick question. If we take public transport, will we still make it for the fish auction at the observation deck (the one not requiring prior balloting). You mentioned the first train arrives 5.18am. Thanks!
Hi Yiling! Yes you will be able to make it. If you manage to reach the station at 5.18am, you will reach the observation deck by around 5.30am, which is the starting time of the tuna auctions.
