Joo Chiat Prawn Mee – Famous Prawn Noodles Stall Makes Its Return At Ayer Rajah Food Centre

Contrary to its name, Joo Chiat Prawn Mee is actually located at Ayer Rajah Food Centre in West Coast. This hawker centre is better known for its large variety of Indian-Muslim food, but I came here on an early weekend morning to check out the famous prawn mee stall.

Joo Chiat Prawn Mee is part of the Lee family prawn mee empire, along with Blanco Court Prawn Mee, Beach Road Prawn Mee, Blanco Prawn Noodle House, and Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee.

Originally located at 15 Crane Road in Joo Chiat, Madam Lee closed down her stall in 2015 to take care of her husband.

To the pleasant surprise of many fans, Joo Chiat Prawn Mee made its return at Ayer Rajah Food Centre in 2019.

Menu

The main dish here is the Prawn Mee, which is sold between $4 and $6. Pork Ribs and Pig’s Tails are available too.

I recommend ordering the Pork Rib Prawn Mee (option 2) if it’s your first time visiting.

Remember to ask for no beansprouts if you do not like them because they come with the dish by default.

Pork Rib Prawn Mee (Soup)

I ordered option two, Pork Rib Prawn Mee (Soup), and had the $6 portion with no beansprouts. It came topped with a generous amount of fried shallots.

The murky broth had the usual rich shrimp flavour, but what really stood out was its intense umami and sweetness. This prawn noodles is a must-try this if you like your hae mee to have a sweeter taste profile.

The prawns were not the usual big size and crunchy type; instead they had more of a natural briny sweetness, with heads and tails still attached so you can suck out their juicy goodness.

The pork ribs were good too, armed with a sweet juicy taste and fall-off-the-bone tenderness.

Pork Rib Prawn Mee (Dry)

I also tried the $5 Pork Rib Prawn Mee (Dry) with no beansprouts.

This dry prawn noodles was surprisingly delicious and satisfying as well! I could really taste the rich fragrance and umami from the potent combination of fried shallots, chilli sauce, and other ingredients.

Conclusion

Overall, Joo Chiat Prawn Mee at Ayer Rajah Food Centre is definitely worth a try for the westies, especially if you like your prawn noodles to be sweeter. After enjoying your hearty bowl of hae mee, I recommend a morning stroll at the nearby West Coast Park to enjoy the lush greenery and scenic sea views.
